Title : Integrating traditional birth practices with modern obstetric care: Pathways to safer maternal health in low-resource settings
Abstract:
Maternal mortality remains a pressing global health challenge, disproportionatelyaffecting women in low- and middle-income countries. While modern obstetricinterventions have improved outcomes, access remains limited in many rural andunderserved communities. Traditional birth attendants (TBAs) and indigenous midwiferypractices continue to play a central role in maternal care, yet they are often undervaluedwithin formal health systems. This presentation explores a model of collaboration that integrates evidence-informedtraditional birth practices with modern obstetric and gynecological care to improvematernal health outcomes. Drawing from clinical experience, public health research, and community engagement through the PSA Care Initiative, this study examines howstructured partnerships with TBAs can enhance safe delivery practices, increaseantenatal care uptake, and reduce preventable complications. A pilot program conducted across three communities engaged 65 TBAs, providingtraining in infection prevention, safe delivery protocols, and referral systems, whilerespecting indigenous birthing customs. Outcomes were assessed over an 18-monthperiod, showing a 40% reduction in unassisted home deliveries, a 28% increase in timelyreferrals to health facilities, and improved maternal satisfaction with care. The findings underscore the value of an inclusive, integrative approach that bridgestraditional and modern systems. By building trust, enhancing safety, and promotingcultural respect, such models contribute to achieving equitable maternal health. Thispresentation advocates for policy frameworks and collaborative strategies that recognize traditional knowledge as a resource, not a barrier, in advancing global maternal health.
