Recently released studies have uncovered a promising new method in treating Covid-19 through traditional medicine. After months of research, researchers have found that certain herbs and spices may have anti-viral effects that could help in treating Covid-19. Early studies have seen promising results with the use of Tribulus Terrestre’s, garlic, green tea, and licorice root among other spices. Tribulus Terrestre’s is a common plant in Mediterranean countries and acts as an anti-inflammatory. In addition, it has been shown in several studies to inhibit influenza virus replication. Garlic, a staple herb used in many cultures, has long been used to fight against a range of illnesses and is naturally high in antiviral properties. Green tea, particularly EGCG, has been used in some studies as a potential treatment for the virus. EGCG, the most abundant catechin in green tea, has been seen to inhibit the replication of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. Licorice root can also be used in the treatment of COVID-19 and has been seen to inhibit viral growth. Early studies suggest that these traditional herbs and spices may be an effective way to reduce the symptoms and severity of COVID-19 and potentially even stop it from spreading. In one early study, participants who were given garlic and green tea extract experienced significantly reduced symptoms and were able to return to their daily lives sooner than those who were not given the treatment. Further studies need to be conducted to better understand the effects of these herbs and spices in treating Covid-19. But for now, this new finding in traditional medicine provides hope and a potential solution to the fight against the virus.
